What may be a piece of junk to you -- and your insurance company -- is treasure to car thieves. Although your junker may not be worth much as a vehicle, the parts -- seats, sound system, airbags when sold individually -- are worth a lot on the black market.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau has released its Hot Wheels 2008 auto theft report for vehicles stolen in 2007, and as in previous years, thieves preferred older models. The top 10 "hottest" vehicles in 2007 included the 20-year-old 1988 Toyota pickup (No.9). At the top of the list are two Honda models-- the 1995 Civic (No. 1) and the 1991 Accord (No.2).
The newer models on the list include the 2007 Toyota Corolla (No.10) and the 2004 Dodge Ram pickup (No. 7).
On a positive note, the Hot Wheels report notes that FBI preliminary data indicates that motor vehicle theft is headed for an 8.9 percent decrease in 2007.
