Michael Bloomberg, ex-NYC mayor, wanted by Brits to run for London mayor

London is calling on former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Some powerful Brits have been trying to persuade the billionaire philanthropist to run for mayor again ... of London, according to the Sunday Times of London.

Steve Hilton, a top adviser to British Prime Minister David Cameron, told the paper:

“It would be an incredible coup for London if Mike Bloomberg could be persuaded to run for mayor here ... His kind of pragmatic, problem-solving leadership is exactly what London needs.”

The Tories, a British political party, are "considering drafting" Bloomberg as their candidate for the 2016 London mayoral election, the report said.

But aides to the once three-time mayor of Gotham say it isn't happening, according to the New York Post, which spoke to former Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson.

Wolfson said, "[Bloomberg] is flattered, but he loves New York City too much to leave it."

Bloomberg has in the past referred to Britain as his "second home, according to Fox News. Although he doesn't have British citizenship, both his daughters do and "he's been a huge investor in Britain, London particularly, to the tune of about £500m," wrote the Sunday Times of London in an editorial commending the idea of a Bloomberg run.

And in October, he was made an honorary knight by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II for his "prodigious entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavours," according to The Telegraph.

Poking fun at Bloomberg's track record in New York City, where he pushed for bans on oversized sodas and trans fats, the New York Post wrote that the powerful Brits backing a Bloomberg candidacy were "perhaps seeking mayoral bans on fizzy pop, black cabs and high-calorie bangers and mash."
