Two friends with a passion for fashion and styling would often joke about the big plans they'd make if they ever opened their own clothing store.

That dream has become reality. Detour Boutiques, their labor of love, opened in October in Sayville, offering a curated selection of clothing, accessories and beauty and skin care products.

"The boutique is geared toward the modern, sophisticated and trendy woman, age 30 and up," notes Dolores Arico, who owns the shop with her business partner, Paige Mazarakis. "We’re always looking to change it up: That’s part of the name ‘Detour.’ We believe we always want to keep it fresh and keep things new," Arico says.

The owners met 15 years ago working at the retail shop Theory in Riverhead. Arico has also worked as senior director of global sales operations and enablement at Peloton and Mazarakis worked in sales, merchandising and event coordination for brands like Goop, Michael Kors and Theory.

"We’ve been friends ever since, working in different brands and companies," says Arico.

Detour clothing includes a broad mix of dresses, fashion, denim and athleisure. A selection of shoes ranges from sneakers to boots to heels.

"Everything is curated to the store, so if you’re coming in for an outfit, we have a shoe to go with it," says Arico.

Outfits can be accessorized with an array of the shop’s jewelry, sunglasses, readers, scarves, bags and belts. The shop’s local brands include Road to Nowhere clothing (Montauk), Roote apothecary (Center Moriches) House of Makeup vegan cosmetics (Sayville), Lulu Frost jewelry (Huntington) and Nuudii System undergarments, Bleu Torch fragrances and Allyoos hair care products, all based in Brooklyn.

Prices start at $20 for accessories and candles and $300 for a leather handbag.
