Malkit Singh, of New Jersey, accused of scamming Roslyn Heights woman out of $32G

A New Jersey man was charged with scamming a 65-year-old Long Island woman out of $32,000 after he called her asking for more money while she was at a police precinct reporting the initial incident, Nassau County police said.

Just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, the Roslyn Heights woman told police she received a call regarding her iPad from someone claiming to be from Amazon. She was directed to speak with a Federal Trade Commission agent to report fraud and was informed she had open warrants.

Malkit Singh, 35, posing as the agent, directed the woman to place $32,000 in cash in a box and meet him at Powerhouse and Roslyn roads, police said in a news release. She put the box inside Singh’s car when he arrived.

The next morning, the woman realized she may have been the victim of a scam and went to the Sixth Precinct in Manhasset to report the incident.

While at the precinct, Singh called the woman again and told her to meet at the same location and to bring $40,000 in cash, according to police.

Before the next exchange could took place, detectives arrested Singh, of Carteret, New Jersey. "The victim recognized Singh to be the same male who had met her the previous day," police said.

Singh was charged with third-degree grand larceny and third-degree attempted grand larceny, police said. He will be arraigned on Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.
