Police officers in Brooklyn on Sunday shot and wounded a man after he allegedly attacked four young girls with a meat cleaver, said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
At about 10:15 a.m., an 11-year-old girl called 911 from a Bensonhurst home to report that her uncle stabbed her and her siblings, Tisch said at a news conference at the scene.
The girl did not know her address, the police commissioner added, so police tracked it down using the phone she used to call them.
Officers kicked down the apartment door to find 49-year-old Longqian Chen allegedly holding a large meat cleaver covered in blood, Tisch said.
"They could see blood on the floor and the walls of the home," she said of officers inside the residence.
Chen allegedly refused their orders to drop the meat cleaver, Tisch said. He then allegedly moved toward the two officers before they fired seven shots, according to Tisch.
Police found the 11-year-old girl and three others — ages 8, 13 and 16 — with "serious slash and stab wounds" inside the home, Tisch said. The girls are expected to survive. A fifth child, a boy, ran to a neighbor’s house to get help.
Investigators also found a second bloody knife inside the home on 84th Street and 17th Avenue, the commissioner said.
Police are investigating Chen’s exact relationship with the children. He was hospitalized in critical condition, the NYPD said.
Chen has no criminal record, according to the NYPD. His family told police that Chen has a history of mental illness, Tisch said.
