Sarabraj Singh, of India, identified as victim of deadly Valley Stream house fire
Police have identified the man killed in a Valley Stream house fire Tuesday morning.
Sarabraj Singh, 18, whose home was listed by Nassau police as The Republic of India, died as a result of the late morning fire on Keller Street, authorities said.
Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said firefighters arrived and found heavy fire in the basement and requested mutual aid.
Firefighters rescued the man from within the burning house and rushed him to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment of critical burns, Uttaro said earlier Tuesday.
Singh died around 2 p.m. at NUMC, authorities said.
A firefighter was injured on the scene and taken to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital for treatment of a head injury Uttaro said.
The injury was sustained after the firefighter "slipped and fell on the ice," Hickman said.
"That's part of the difficulty of dealing with a fire in subfreezing weather," he added.
The injured volunteer was "being observed and doing OK" as of around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Hickman said.
At least five other departments comprising about 60 firefighters helped bring the fire under control within an hour, Uttaro said.
The house suffered heavy structural damage; detectives are investigating the cause of the blaze, Uttaro said.
