Holiday travel outlook: Snow Friday night into Saturday makes for slippery roads
Overcast skies, falling temperatures, rain and — a good chance of snow.
That's what Long Islanders traveling Friday and Saturday, getting a start on the holiday week ahead, can expect.
The National Weather Service warned travelers in the tristate area and in the Northeast they can expect "pockets of moderate snow" and widespread "light snow" Friday night into Saturday, with some areas to our north seeing 2-4 inches.
Along with snow, the high will be just 35 degrees Saturday — and an additional cold front will drop overnight temperatures into the mid-teens Saturday into Sunday. The high for Sunday will be in the low-to-mid 20s, the weather service said.
The good news is there figures to be plenty of sunshine Sunday and Monday. The bad news is overnight temperatures will remain frigid — and wind chill values will hammer the cold even further through Monday. There's also a chance for a rain/snow mix in the forecast Tuesday.
Saturday temperatures will have a "tough time getting above the freezing mark" and highs will in the low 30s, Dominic Ramunni, a weather service meteorologist said. Long Islanders can also expect breezy conditions, which will help dry out the area and lower any chance of ice on roads and sidewalks.
Ramunni said that Sunday and Monday will reach low temperatures not seen since early 2023.
Temperatures Sunday will drop to the mid-20s, but due to wind chills, it will feel colder, more like in the teens. Lows will decrease into the single digits Sunday night into Monday morning.
"Not out of the norm, but certainly the coldest air that we've seen so far this season," Ramunni said. "So hopefully folks are bundling up."
