Long Island weekend weather forecast: Rain with chance of thunderstorms
After a string of consistently sunny skies, Long Island weather will take a stormy turn this weekend, as the National Weather Service forecast up to half an inch of rainfall on Saturday.
Friday will see highs in the upper 60s and low 70s on central and northern Long Island, and low 60s for the South Shore and East End.
Increasing clouds and moisture will take shape by Friday night.
Service meteorologist Matt Wunsch said Long Island may see scattered showers in the evening, but the best chance of rain will be after midnight.
A slight chance of thunderstorms and locally heavier pockets of rain may occur, but it is not highly likely, he said.
Showers will linger through Saturday before eding in the afternoon. Long Island could receive a half inch up to ¾ of an inch of rainfall.
"It probably won’t be the best day to be out," Wunsch said.
Saturday’s temperatures only drop slightly from Friday, as highs will be in the mid- to low 60s.
Sunday will remain dry, but start off cloudy, with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s.
Skies will become "clearer for us through the day," Wunsch said.
Long Island may also see 15-to-25 mph winds with gust ups to 35 mph.
Wunsch said Sunday’s temperatures will be normal, as the average high for this time of year is 62.
Temperatures will rebound to the upper 60s and lower 70s on Monday.
