	David J. Criblez is a features and entertainment reporter, covering everything from festivals and events to local music and&nbsp;stand-up comedy. Before his 11 years at Newsday, David was the editor-in-chief of the Oyster Bay Guardian weekly local newspaper. He was also a senior reporter at the Island Ear and Good Times magazine.

My first job was going door to door in Suffolk County asking residents one question: Would you like to subscribe to Newsday?



	Fast forward 30 years and I&rsquo;m once again asking questions on behalf of Long Island&rsquo;s daily paper, even occasionally knocking on doors.



	My mother, a now-retired school teacher, claims I taught myself to read before entering kindergarten by fetching the paper from our yellow Newsday mailbox so I could learn about my beloved Mets.



	When I was 7 years old, my dad, Pete Parpan, took a job in the art department at Newsday, designing ads for 22 years before retiring in 2008. I also had a cousin who worked many years on the printing press, and as a kid I&rsquo;d visit them both at the former Newsday headquarters on Pinelawn Road.



	That childhood experience, and a natural curiosity about how the world operates, inspired me to become a journalist &ndash; and I&rsquo;ve since held nearly every type of job in a newsroom.



	I began my journalism career covering sports in Southern California. When I moved back to Long Island three years later, I went to work as a reporter and editor for East End weeklies, spending the next 16 years covering everything from school boards to town meetings, business news and court cases. A former editor once referred to me as a &ldquo;Swiss Army Knife of a journalist,&rdquo; one heckuva headstone epitaph.



	I&rsquo;m proud to spend my 20th year in journalism with the newspaper whose stories educated me about the island I was raised on. Newsday also has afforded me my first opportunity to focus on a single beat: courts.



	The stories that come out of the courthouses in Riverhead and Central Islip are among Newsday&rsquo;s most read &hellip; and most sensitive. I consider it a great privilege and responsibility to share these stories with Newsday readers and work tirelessly to find the cases most relevant to you.



	My door-to-door sales days may be a distant memory, but I&rsquo;m thrilled to now be working with the talented Newsday journalists who always have made Long Island journalism worth paying for.

I started at Newsday 24 years ago, initially working as a technology reporter and columnist. Born in Queens, I grew up in Bay Shore, graduated from Islip High School, and spent college years upstate and in California, where I earned a bachelor&rsquo;s degree in journalism from San Diego State University.



	For most of my career at Newsday I&rsquo;ve covered the energy beat, but my work has led me to other regular areas of coverage, including agriculture and Long Island&rsquo;s wineries, Indian Nations, and fisheries. After spending my early teens delivering Newsday in my Bay Shore neighborhood, I worked summers as a clammer, a pool builder and boat-yard hand. I once flipped a dump truck full of concrete onto a Great Neck lawn, raked clams on the Great South Bay, and climbed steel-bar walls as an ironworker&mdash; all before I left college.



	Many of my journalism heroes were institutions at Newsday before I arrived, and some were here when I joined &mdash; columnists like Jimmy Breslin and consumer watchdog Henry Gilgoff, international reporters like Tina Susman and Letta Taylor. My early work at Newsday took me around the world &mdash; to China to write about Charles Wang&rsquo;s homeland, to London to cover subway bombings, to Belfast as the IRA was disarming, and to Sweden, where I tracked an American fugitive to a seaside village on the Baltic Sea.



	I&rsquo;ve always been energized by the passion and bravery of the people who take risks to tell us their stories &mdash; about misdeeds, inconceivable truths, and hidden conflicts. When there&rsquo;s an absence of public information, journalists thrive on the mission to fill the void, to paint the full canvas. It was evident last year when a cyberattack shut down many Suffolk County government services, and information was scarce.



	Reporters often get criticized for failing to cover the positive stories and focusing on the negative, but the criticism misses the point. On Long Island, there are often more than two sides to each story, some happy, some not. I feel obligated to give equal voice to as many of them as I can squeeze into 600 words. It&rsquo;s not always easy, balancing that tension among opposing forces, but it&rsquo;s central to the role of Newsday, and it&rsquo;s the part of the job that&rsquo;s most rewarding.
