College roundup: Stony Brook women's lacrosse falls in NCAA tournament

The comeback effort by the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team Sunday afternoon fell short as the 10th-seeded Seawolves lost to ninth-seeded Loyola Maryland, 9-8, in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament in Baltimore.

The Seawolves (15-4) trailed 9-5 with eight minutes remaining but scored three consecutive goals to get within a goal. Loyola was able to win the draw control with 17 seconds left and ran out the clock.

North Babylon's Kailyn Hart scored four goals and Eastport-South Manor's Ellie Masera added a goal and three assists.

Adelphi women fall in D-II quarters

Third-seeded Adelphi lost at top-seeded Pace, 14-5, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon in Pleasantville, New York. Pace raced out to a 6-0 lead after the first period and increased the lead to 9-2 after two periods. Adelphi cut the deficit to 10-4 after three periods, but Pace scored four straight goals in the fourth period. Kerrin Heuser of Hicksville led Adelphi with two goals, and Malverne’s Izzy Grant, Danielle Marino of West Islip and Seaford’s Alexandra Leggio each scored a goal. West Islip’s Kristina Schweitzer, Grant and Marino each had an assist. Adelphi beat No. 2 seed Le Moyne, 16-12, on Friday to advance to play Pace. Adelphi had lost to Le Moyne, 17-6, in the Northeast-10 tournament semifinals a week earlier. Pace (19-2) advances to the national semifinals on Friday. Adelphi, which was making its 17th appearance in the NCAA tournament, ends the season at 13-7. 

Adelphi men ousted in D-II quarters

Fifth-seeded Adelphi lost at top-seeded Le Moyne, 11-7, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon in Syracuse. Adelphi took a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by Logan Tucker and Eamon Hall, who are both from Massapequa. Le Moyne scored two straight goals to take a 3-2 in the second period and the teams traded goals for the remainder of the period, resulting in a 4-4 tie heading to the third period. Le Moyne took control in the third period, outscoring the Panthers 4-2, and increased the lead by outscoring Adelphi 3-1 in the fourth period. Joseph Duchnowsky of Port Washington led Adelphi with two goals and an assist. Jack Hipchen, Massapequa’s Brian Harinski, Merrick’s Dylan Barry, Tucker and Hall each scored a goal. Seaford’s Jason Rebaudo and Hall each had an assist. Le Moyne (17-0) advances to the national semifinals on May 21. Adelphi, which beat fourth-seeded Bentley on Friday in the first round to advance to play Le Moyne, finishes the season at 16-4.

Nassau CCC falls in NJCAA championship

Riverhead's Kamryn Gill had three goals and one assist as second-seeded Nassau County Community College fell to No. 1 Harford, 13-8, in the NJCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship in Bel Air, MD. Islip's Thomas Mai had one goal and two assists and Port Washington's Brian Pohoreckyj added two goals for Nassau CCC, who finished the season 13-2.

BASEBALL

St. Joseph's (L.I.) wins Skyline title

The top-seeded St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team claimed its second straight Skyline Conference tournament championship with a 10-4 win over No. 2 SUNY Maritime at Gregg Alfano Field in Patchogue on Sunday afternoon. Rocky Point's James Maggio (three RBIs) and Centereach's Ryan Decoursey each went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Oceanside's John Lynch (Holy Trinity) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Merrick's Nick Vicino (Calhoun) and Bay Shore's Hermes Abreu both went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Coram's Michael Manzolillo (Newfield) got the win throwing five innings of scoreless relief without allowing a hit while fanning four. Farmingdale's Phil Krpata was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after going 6-for-11, with two doubles, a home run, seven runs, seven stolen bases, and three RBIs. Next up, the Golden Eagles (30-9) advance to the DIII NCAA Regional Tournament and will learn their opponents during the selection show scheduled for Monday at noon.

SOFTBALL

LIU secures Northeast Conference title

Mari Narvaiz scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning when she hustled home on an throwing error as Priscilla Gillies stole second, and Alyssa Okada scored on a wild pitch later in the frame as second-seeded LIU won the Northeast Conference title with a 4-2 victory over No. 4 Merrimack in a winner-take-all championship game.

LIU (32-24) captured its first NEC postseason title since 2016.

The Sharks defeated Merrimack on consecutive days in the championship round after Merrimack sent the Sharks into the losers' bracket with a win between the two teams on Friday. LIU already had claimed the NCAA berth before the championship round, since Merrimack is still transitioning from Division II and is not yet eligible.

LIU will next face fifth-ranked Alabama in an NCAA regional matchup in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
