The original New York Dragon is joining the new-look New York Dragons' coaching staff.
Sean Tremblay, the first player signed by the original New York Dragons of the Arena Football League in 2001, has been named an assistant coach for the New York Dragons of the Entertainment Football Association.
“We’re excited to have Sean join the staff,” said Gerald Filardi, the Dragons head coach and director of football operations. “He brings a lot of coaching and playing experience to the staff. We’re all going to have to wear a few different hats to get this thing rolling. Sean can step into any role and do what needs to be done. He’s an original Dragon and has the arena experience.”
Tremblay, 49, of Port Jefferson Station, played in the AFL for seven years, winning a championship with the Albany Firebirds in 1999.
“I’d like to think that my experience in the Arena Football League would be very helpful,” Tremblay said. “It’s a full circle moment for me. My seven seasons in the Arena Football League were some of the best in my life. It’s a different action-packed game. There are some rule changes from when I played. We’ll have to see if we still have the high motion where the receivers hit the line running up field and a few other rules. But for the guys up front it’s football, blocking and tackling.”
Tremblay, who has served as a coach in the Comsewogue High School District for the past 26 years, including 14 as the head coach will remain with the school team this fall season. He also is a guidance counselor at the high school.
“I expect to coach the lines and help on the defensive side of the ball,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity. I know Peter [Schwartz] well as I had joined him on the ESPN broadcasts after my career ended.”
The Dragons will be hosting open tryouts on April 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on April 19 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at U.S. Academy of Soccer in Farmingdale.
