One of Aaron Rodgers’ buddies is sticking with the Jets.
Allen Lazard has agreed to a restructured contract with the Jets, according to overthecap.com. The veteran receiver is taking an $8.5 million pay cut in his revised deal.
Lazard was due to make more than $11 million this season with his cap number counting for $13.2 million. The expectation was he would be cut. But new general manager Darren Mougey revealed at last week’s league meetings that the Jets were “working through” restructuring Lazard’s contract and that they “feel good about where that's going.”
In the reworked contract, Lazard has a $2.25 million base salary, with $1.75 million guaranteed. He could make another $2.5 million in incentives. Lazard’s cap number dropped to $4.6 million. He will be a free agent in 2026.
New coach Aaron Glenn said he hoped something could be worked out with Lazard.
“Any time you have a player of that magnitude, he's a really good blocker,” said Glenn, formerly the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator. “Listen, I played against him a number of times when he was in Green Bay. So I know what he brings to the table.”
The Jets signed Lazard to a four-year, $44 million contract in 2023 when they had already begun pursuing Rodgers. The two were teammates with the Packers.
Lazard struggled to make an impact and was benched twice in his first season with Rodgers sidelined due to a torn Achilles tendon. Lazard has caught 60 passes for 841 yards and seven touchdowns in 26 games with the Jets. Five of those touchdowns were thrown by Rodgers last season.
The Jets released Rodgers and another ex-Packer, Davante Adams, last month.
With Lazard staying, the Jets’ receiver room has more depth. Garrett Wilson is the star of the group that also includes Tyler Johnson, Josh Reynolds, Malachi Corley and Xavier Gipson.
