Newsday Wrestler of the Year
Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez, Long Beach, 116, Jr., 49-2, 157-14
Sibomana-Rodriguez won his second state title, and this one was a thriller. He defeated Cooper Merli of Newburgh Free Academy in overtime at 116 pounds in Division I. He used a single leg to a whip in the state final to secure the fall at 6:44. He also beat Merli in overtime to capture the Eastern States Tournament title earlier in the season. Sibomana-Rodriguez, who burst on to the wrestling scene by winning the state title at 102 pounds as an eighth-grader, is Long Beach's 18th state wrestling champion. It is the most of any Nassau school.
Sibomana-Rodriguez, who is committed to North Carolina, has persevered throughout his life. When he was 6, he survived an attack by a troop of chimpanzees while playing with family outside his village near the Virunga National Park in the Congo. While his brother and cousin were killed in the attack, he survived with traumatic injuries to his lips, face and right ear and has had 21 surgeries to reconstruct his face.
