Newsday Girls Fencer of the Year: Aurora Aschettino, Oyster Bay, Jr.
Aurora Aschettino started her season the best way a Long Island fencer could by taking first place in foil at the Brentwood holiday tournament, and she ended it the same way by winning the Nassau title.
“She’s one heck of an athlete and I saw that when she came into the junior high program as a seventh-grader,” Oyster Bay coach John Bruckner said. “She took like a fish to water and her love for the sport kept growing.”
Aschettino finished the regular season with a 25-1 record.
Angelina Fazzini, Great Neck South, Sr.
She won the Nassau individual championship at epee and also went 3-0 and won the deciding match as Great Neck South won its fourth straight Nassau team championship. She finished the regular season 26-1.
Alexa Horan, Ward Melville, Sr.
She finished the regular season with a 39-0 record and won the Suffolk individual championship at sabre.
Jovana Lau, Herricks, Sr.
Lau went 24-5 and won her second Nassau individual title at sabre. She was also a Newsday All-Long Island selection in 2020.
Melina Nicou, Commack, Sr.
She went 3-0 in the final and was a key contributor all season as Commack won its first Long Island team championship. She also took second in foil at the Brentwood holiday tournament.
Talia Perlman, Great Neck North, Sr.
Perlman went undefeated at 27-0 during the regular season and finished second in foil at the individual county championship.
Anna Rohring, Commack, Soph.
She won the Suffolk individual foil championship and was a big part of Commack’s top foil team, which led the Cougars to the Long Island championship.
Mia Santana, Sayville, Jr.
Santana had a 25-2 record in the regular season and won the Suffolk individual epee championship.
Coach of the Year: Jackie Sadiker, Commack
Sadiker guided Commack to a 15-0 record and the program's first Long Island championship.
