Newsday Golfer of the Year: Catherine Slade, Kellenberg, Sr.

As Catherine Slade stood at the 18th tee box, she thought about the past 12 years she had been playing golf and how this was her proudest moment.

The Kellenberg senior shot an 11-over par 83 at Silver Lake Golf Course on Staten Island to capture her first CHSAA girls golf title.

“I can’t recall a shot that I wasn’t extremely happy with,” Slade said. “I had complete concentration. My mental game was on point. I was very proud of myself to realize that finally my mental game was there. It was a beautiful moment.”

Slade noted that the hilly and narrow course posed a challenge for her, but having cheerleaders on the course boosted her confidence.

“Me and Bridget [LaRosa] would never go against each other. We always pick each other up, shot after shot,” Slade said of her Kellenberg teammate. “My dad was also watching from the gates. I saw him on every hole, and it was a confidence boost to see him there just cheering me on.”

“She’s always having fun with her teammates and it helps her out there,” Kellenberg coach Keith Doran said. “Everyone was so proud of her.”

“I just couldn’t be prouder of how I played," LaRosa said. "It was a culminating moment.”
