Newsday Athlete of the Year: Jillian Scully, Miller Place, Jr. 

Scully was the best thrower in the state this year, winning three Federation titles. The junior took the shot put title at the indoor state championships in March, tossing 42 feet, 11 ½ inches. She threw a 46-11 ½ in shot put and a 154-4 in discus to secure two more Federation titles at the outdoor state championships earlier this month.  Her performance at the spring championships was particularly dominant, winning the shot put by 5 feet, 1 ¼ inches and the discus by 26-10.

Nassau Runner of the Year: Chika Akazi, Uniondale, Sr.

The University of Pennsylvania commit dominated all year. In the winter, she posted an 8.21 to win the 55-meter hurdles state championship. Once the spring hit, she continued to shine, winning the 100 hurdles title in 14.07.

Suffolk Runner of the Year: Zariel Macchia, Floyd, Jr.

Macchia won the indoor state title in the 1,000 in 2 minutes, 49.23 seconds. She also finished second in the indoor 3,000 in 9:25.77, a Long Island record. In the spring, she got over the hump in the sport's longest regularly competed race, winning the outdoor 3,000 title in 9:34.75. She also placed fifth in the outdoor 1,500 state championship in 4:32.53 .

Lexie Cole, Comsewogue, Fr.

As a freshman, Cole qualified the state championships in both seasons. She was third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:00.35 at the outdoor state championships. In the winter, she ran a 4:46.57 in the 1,500.

Camryn Daley, St. Anthony’s, Jr.

Daley is one of the fastest sprinters on Long Island. She finished third in the 100 state championship in 12.14 seconds. In the winter, she qualified for the state championships in the 55. She ran the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay team for St. Anthony’s that competed in the state championship.

Sariah Doresca, Baldwin, Jr.

Doresca captured the 55 state championship in the indoor season with a 6.93. She also ran the anchor leg of the team’s state champion 4x200 meter relay.

Laina Friedmann, Smithtown West, Sr.

Friedmann was second in the 1,000 in 2:49.41 at the indoor state championships. Outdoors, she was seventh in the 800 in 2:10.46 and fourth in the 1,500 4:28.83.

Ashley Fulton, Elmont, Sr.

The Clemson commit continued her indoor dominance with a 38.15-second win to take the 300 state title in March. She also finished fourth in the 55 in 7.02. In the spring, she qualified for the state championship meet in both the 100 and 200.

Cali Gabrielson, Mt. Sinai, 8th Grade

As the youngest member of the 2024 All-Long Island Team, Gabrielson impressed across both seasons. She won the outdoor Division II 3,000 state championship in 9:56.50.  Indoors, she was seventh in the 3,000 in 9:58.72.

Zaria Hall, East Meadow, So.

Hall won the Division I outdoor 1,500 title in 4:28.57. Indoors, she was fifth in the 1,500 in 4:36.48 and ran a 2:51.87 in the 1,000.

Alexa Jacobs, Port Jefferson, So.

This school year, Jacobs proved that she's one of the best sprinters in the state. She qualified for the finals in both the 55 and 300 at the indoor state championships and won the state Division II 100 title outdoors in 12.3. She was third in the Division II 200 in 25.41 and finished milliseconds out of the Top 5 in the Federation 100 (12.25).

Nicea Jones, Malverne, Jr.

Jones was another Division II runner who flourished en route to becoming a state titleholder. In the spring, she sprinted a 55.71 to win the Federation 400.

Samara Lawrence, North Babylon, Sr.

Lawrence won the Division I 400 title in 57.05 and was second in the Federation final in 56.25 at the outdoor state championships.

Sophia McInnes, Bayport Blue-Point, Jr.

McInnes proved herself to be one of the best mid-distance runners in the state. Outdoors, she won the 800 (2:08.94) and 1,500 (4:27.19) Division II state titles. She also ran on 4X400 and 4X800 relay teams that won Division II state titles.

Lily Strebel, Westhampton, Jr.

Strebel was fourth in the 1,500 in 4:34.77 at the indoor state championships and was 12th in the 3,000 in 10:01.38 at the outdoor state championships.

Baldwin’s 4x200 meter relay (Doresca, Kelys Walker, Jahzara Emeli, Breanne Barnett)

They won the state indoor title in 1:40.11, their second-straight crown. Their performance broke the previous state meet record of 1:40.27, set by Huntington in 2020.

Coach of the Year: Olivier St. Aude, St. Anthony’s

St. Aude’s group won the CHSAA Intersectional championship on Randall’s Island. Under his guidance, five different individual competitors (three runners, two throwers) made it to the indoor or outdoor state championships. In the spring, St. Aude’s 4x100 and 4x800 relay teams qualified for the state finals.
