Carey showed up Friday on Roslyn’s turf having dropped three straight, making it a wrong-way run of five losses in six games. This was a boys lacrosse team with talent but not quite in sync.
“We haven’t played a really complete game maybe all year but particularly the last three games,” coach Tom Aiello said. “So this group has been down, but they’ve been working hard . . . And it came together today.”
The Seahawks played with energy and were in sync in every way.
Chris Obertis delivered four goals and an assist, Mike Verderosa scored four and Richie Metzger made 11 saves in a 13-3 Nassau Conference I win.
“To give credit to our opponents, we play a tough schedule, definitely,” Metzger said. “But just coming together as a unit, I think we saw that here today. We definitely meshed together. That was probably our best game as a whole. Yeah, we just weren’t playing together in the previous games.
“But now I think we’re riding high and I think we’re meshing together as one.”
They moved to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the league. They hope they can contend for the Class B title.
“That’s always the goal at the end of the year,” Obertis said. “I think it’s very possible this year. We have a lot of talent. We have a lot of experience on this team. If we play as a team, it could be very possible.”
Roslyn is 1-4 in the league, but it’s also 5-5 overall, including three losses by two goals or less.
“I think we’re fine,” coach Jesse Sorensen said. “We’ll lick our wounds from this one, but then we’ve got a game (at Island Trees) on Tuesday.”
Spencer Cymbler scored to give them a 1-0 lead, his first of two.
Then Carey posted seven straight goals, including two apiece by Verderosa and Obertis. When Verderosa scored 2:37 into the second quarter, it was 7-1.
Josh Berger, who arrived with a Nassau-leading 40 goals for the Bulldogs, then scored for the lone time. But Jayden Radow and Obertis delivered goals in the final 50 seconds of the half, bringing it to 9-2.
Sorensen credited Aiello for his defensive plan, saying, “They locked off Josh and then you’re in a zone defense behind it.”
Aiello was certainly pleased.
“We had to stop Berger and we did,” he said. “ . . . And we had to score in transition and we did.”
