Despite a two-week layoff, the Cold Spring Harbor boys lacrosse team showed no signs of rust on Thursday night to become Nassau Class D champions once more. Top-seeded Cold Spring Harbor defeated No. 3 Friends Academy, 15-8, at Hofstra to secure its third consecutive county title behind three different four-point performances and a trio of hat tricks.

Cold Spring Harbor had not played since May 9, but coach Dennis Bonn had his team ready to play. They owned an advantage over Friends Academy in every statistical category.

Bonn was full of smiles and laughs after the game.

“It never gets old,” Bonn said. “When you can get a piece of hardware, a trophy, or a plaque that says, ‘You’re the best team,' it’s a special moment. And it’s for the kids. When you put the pads on at the beginning of the season . . . the goal is to win a county championship, and we did that.”

Cold Spring Harbor (10-6) took 46 shots and landed 29 on net, compared to Friends Academy’s 24 and 16. Attack Kevin Burns and midfielder Alex Bauer each totaled three goals and one assist to lead Cold Spring Harbor’s offense.

Burns credited his success to the off-the-ball work his teammates did.

“A lot of it goes to my teammates for getting through,” Burns said. “I fed my teammates, and we got the ball moving. We moved well and just found the back of the net.”

Midfielder Roy Testa also had three goals for Cold Spring Harbor. The final came off a dime from attack Andrew Mazzei, one of three Seahawks to dish out two assists. He also scored twice.

Mazzei, a senior who helped win last year’s title and will be attending Bucknell, was elated to be crowned champion once again.

“It feels great. It never gets old, like Coach Bonn says,” Mazzei said. “I’m really excited. Now we’re looking at the [Long Island championship]. We’re going to prepare for that, and we’ll see where we’re heading.”

Midfielder Ryan McGloin contributed a goal and two assists. Fellow midfielder Sam Bruno did it all, as he scored a goal, won 11 of 17 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls to help keep the ball in his team’s hands. Clarke Beard led Friends Academy (11-7) with three goals.

Next up for Cold Spring Harbor: A chance at another three-peat in the Long Island championship game. It will face Babylon at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hofstra.
