Olivia Docyk, tough 'D' help Carle Place field hockey top Cold Spring Harbor for another Nassau C title
Olivia Docyk made sure that the streak would live on for the Carle Place field hockey program.
Docyk had a goal and an assist to propel No. 1 Carle Place past No. 2 Cold Spring Harbor, 2-1, in the Nassau Class C final on Tuesday night at Berner Middle School. The Frogs earned their ninth consecutive county championship, a run dating back to 2013.
Carle Place will face Pierson in the Long Island C final on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Centereach High School, in a rematch of the COVID-19-altered spring season championship. The Frogs defeated the Whalers, 2-1, on April 24 to earn the title.
On Tuesday, Docyk scored off a penalty corner following a pass from Laura Fowler to give her team a 1-0 lead just under four minutes into the game. With six minutes remaining in the first half, she found the stick of Alexus Coward, who scored to put the Frogs (6-7) ahead 2-0.
Anne Tauckus scored inside the first minute of the third quarter to bring Cold Spring Harbor (6-8) within 1, but Justina Cavallaro (six saves) and the Carle Place defense stiffened to halt a potential comeback attempt. Rose Rogers made six saves in the loss.
"I got lucky with such a strong group of players," said first year head coach Maria Guerrisi. "There are a lot of returners and new faces. It is a great mix. I have a team that is extremely coachable and that’s always a great asset to have."
