On a windy, 44-degree day at Mount Sinai High School, the only breeze making its presence felt came from Rocky Point’s cage.
Known by her nickname “Breezy,” Brianna Henke helped the Rocky Point girls lacrosse team lock down a pivotal 5-4 road victory in Suffolk League II play on Thursday afternoon. The University of Massachusetts Amherst commit made eight saves in net for Rocky Point (4-1), including three crucial stops in the fourth quarter.
Halfway through the fourth quarter with Rocky Point leading by just a goal, Henke saved consecutive free-position shots from Mount Sinai within 30 seconds of each other. Later, with just 2:23 left in the game, Mount Sinai moved the ball effectively in the eight-meter arc and created a good look from the right side, but Henke dropped to a knee to deflect a low shot and save the day.
“It’s definitely a lot of pressure, but I just try to stay cool, calm and collected, just not let it get to my head and play my game,” Henke said. “It’s a lot, knowing that if they score and the game is tied, that’s on me. But like I said, I just try to stay calm, watch the ball, see where it’s going and make the save.”
After Henke’s final save, junior midfielder Kaleigh Moeller — who scored two goals in the first quarter — scooped up the ground ball and pushed it up the field to sophomore defender Teagan Trentowski to set up the successful clear.
Watching Trentowski cross midfield and essentially ice the game allowed Henke to bask in the moment, as it made her efforts in goal worth it.
“It was just crazy, after this back-and-forth battle of a game and not scoring for a quarter, seeing that happen really just calmed me, knowing that we just beat them,” Henke said.
Neither team scored in the second or fourth quarters. With 2:32 left in the third quarter, trailing 4-3, Rocky Point attacker Cadence Adamo caught a feed at the right top of the 12-meter arc and fired it into the back of the net to tie the game. With 1:19 remaining in the period, Adamo took a pass from the X, faked out the goalie on the left doorstep and fired it in to give the Eagles the lead for good.
“It does feel really good that I helped bring my team to success today,” Adamo said.
Other contributors to the win were senior midfielders Kylie Lamoureux (one goal, two assists) and Fiona Vu (one assist), as well as eighth grade attacker Colbie Burke (one assist). For Mount Sinai (1-3), Alexa Spallina finished with a goal and two assists and sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Arrington saved seven shots.
