It was not, Islanders coach Patrick Roy explained, a matter of having come to the end of his rope with Maxim Tsyplakov.

Rather, Roy needed another way to send a message to the 26-year-old rookie right wing.

So after the Islanders’ 4-1 loss to the Kings at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles late Tuesday night, it became the right time and right place for Roy to publicly challenge Tsyplakov.

A little more than a day-and-a-half later, Roy explained his rationale for critiquing Tsyplakov to a room of reporters.

“Sometimes you have to do what you have to do,” Roy said after practice at Northwell Health Ice Center on Thursday. “I hope that was a good step in the right direction, having him see the paper or on the TV or whatever it is in the media.

“So I hope [Tsyplakov takes the message to heart] because he’s a great person; he wants to do well. But sometimes you need more from some people.”

In this case, what was required was to not fumble the puck away deep in the Islanders’ defensive zone and then lose track of his coverage assignment 37 seconds after Anders Lee tied the score at 1-1 midway through the second period.

Which is exactly what happened.

Los Angeles’ Warren Foegele and Trevor Moore’s forecheck caused Tsyplakov to turn the puck over along the half wall. Foegele made a quick pass to Moore, who found Phillip Danault for a one-timer from the top of the right circle over Ilya Sorokin’s glove for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Replays showed that Tsyplakov had his back to Danault and then tried to race back into the play to no avail.

“[Tsyplakov] had a horrible turnover — actually two — on that same play,” Roy said during his postgame availability. “He needs to be better than that.”

During the half-hour practice, it appeared as if Tsyplakov was going to be scratched for the Islanders’ game at UBS Arena against the Oilers on Friday night, along with defensemen Mike Reilly and Scott Perunovich, given that veteran Matt Martin comprised one-third of the fourth line along with Kyle MacLean and Marc Gatcomb.

However, Roy, when asked about the lineup, said Tsyplakov “is playing, absolutely.”

Tsyplakov, who signed a one-year, $950,000 contract with the Islanders last May, has seven goals and 20 assists for 27 points in 59 games.

“[Tsyplakov] is a tough kid,” Anders Lee said. “He’s being coached hard and I think he responds well to it. I think he’s going to have a great game tomorrow.”

Notes & quotes: Roy did not have an update on defenseman Adam Boqvist, who left the loss to the Kings at 4:47 of the second period after a hard shoulder-to-shoulder check from Kevin Fiala and did not return ... Roy reiterated that Anthony Duclair’s disallowed goal at 10:34 of the second period should have counted. “I felt like the rulebook is pretty clear on that,” he said when asked if he had received an explanation or clarification from the NHL. “[Rule 69.7], if you’re going in and it is incidental — contact with the goaltender — the play if you’re in the crease or out of the crease, it should result in a goal. So if they don’t like that rule, just take it out of the [rulebook].”
