Olympics 2024: How Long Island natives fared in Saturday's action
Two of Long Island’s own turned in productive games, but they couldn’t keep the Puerto Rico women’s basketball team in play for quarterfinal contention Saturday at the Paris Olympics.
Bellport’s Arella Guirantes posted 20 points, four rebounds and two assists and North Babylon’s Brianna Jones added 13 points in an 80-58 loss to China.
So Puerto Rico, which had two defeats by three points or less, finished 0-3 in Group A play and was eliminated.
Jones hit five of her 10 shots, including 3-for-6 on three-point tries. Former Stony Brook player India Pagan contributed one steal.
Crystal Dunn had a better day, delivering a big assist and steady defensive play for the U.S. women’s soccer team.
The Rockville Centre native started at left back against Japan in the quarterfinals. She sent a long pass ahead to set up Trinity Rodman’s goal during stoppage time in the first of two periods of extra time. It stood up for a 1-0 win.
So Dunn and her teammates will face Germany in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Former Uniondale standout Chris Borzor represented Haiti and ran the fastest time in his preliminary heat in the 100 meters to advance to Round 1. In fact, he owned the fastest overall time in the six heats — 10.26 seconds.
But Borzor, who moved from Haiti to Baldwin at around age 7 and was Newsday’s Nassau Runner of the Year as a Uniondale senior in 2018, then crossed at 10.28 to place fifth in his following race and didn’t qualify for Sunday’s semis.
The top three in each of the eight heats along with the next three fastest advanced. So 27 moved on. Borzor’s time was 44th overall.
And in fencing, the Egyptian team featuring individual epee bronze-medal winner Mo Elsayed of LIU didn’t make the semis Friday in the team epee competition.
