Orgy

Orgy Credit: Handout

Sauntering toward you with an open kimono and a condescending smirk, "A Good Old Fashioned Orgy" imagines itself a daring sex comedy but ends up a total turnoff. Its hipster get-up can't hide the frat brother underneath: smarmy, sniggering and wholly unaware of its appalling sense of entitlement.

Jason Sudeikis is Eric, the kind of overgrown adolescent who by now must be grating even to actual overgrown adolescents. He spends most of his time throwing elaborate parties at his father's house in the Hamptons (filming took place in Wilmington, N.C.), but that's about to end. Pop (Don Johnson) is selling the place.

So Eric thinks up one last bash -- an orgy! Just among friends, mind you. They are, in ascending order of lameness: sexually shy Laura (Lindsay Sloane); nebbishy Adam (Nick Kroll); unremarkable Sue (Michelle Borth); indecisive Doug (Martin Starr) and his willowy girlfriend, Willow (Angela Sarafyan); weak-minded Alison (Lake Bell); and the obligatory overweight slob, Mike (Tyler Labine). Leslie Bibb ("Zookeeper") plays a pretty Realtor inexplicably attracted to Eric.

This is a fine cast with great comedic potential, but filmmakers Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck, veteran comedy writers bungling their directorial debut, utterly waste the talent. Sudeikis and Labine riff nicely together, and Will Forte and Lucy Punch are briefly endearing as a married couple outraged at being excluded. The others are reduced to shallow caricatures of urban cool.

A reconnaissance mission to a local swingers' club -- cue the usual saggy perverts -- provides reassurance: We are not like those people! But when the big day arrives, guess which gender gets bi-curious and which gender gathers around to watch? Funny how that happens in R-rated comedies for straight guys. Actually, it's not funny at all, and neither is this smug, square, self-satisfied little movie.
