Cops: Officers rescue wayward pooch from Kings Park cesspool

A dog chasing a rabbit fell down a hole — a deep and abandoned cesspool from which he had to be rescued Tuesday night by emergency service officers, Suffolk police said.

Officers fetched Poofa, a 6-year-old golden doodle, by using a mechanical pulley system to lower themselves 16 feet into the cesspool in Kings Park.

Boris Avezov of Belmore had been walking with his dog outside the Superior Ice Rink, where his children were skating, when Poofa pulled on his leash and dashed after a rabbit about 7:30 p.m., police said.

The chase ended behind the skating rink, where the cesspool was located, police said.

The golden doodle was in there about an hour. The dog’s best friends turned out to be officers Tom Russo, Mike Cocia and Lance Prager, who braved the depths with an assist from officers Glen Baillargeon, Gerry Sheridan and Mike Simpson, who operated the pulley system to rescue the rabbit chaser, police said.

Poofa came out unscathed, police said. But no word on how he came out smelling.
