Centereach woman succumbs to injuries from Smith Haven Mall crash
A Centereach woman has died of her injuries after being hurt last week in a two-vehicle crash by the Smith Haven Mall, Suffolk police said Thursday.
Corinne Maloney, 34, was a passenger in Christopher Ferchland's pickup truck when it collided Sept. 2 with a Honda by an entrance to the mall, said Det. Sgt. John Fives of the Fourth Precinct.
Maloney, who sustained head trauma and other injuries, died the following day at Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.
Ferchland, 34, of Farmingville, remained at the hospital Thursday with serious injuries, police said, while the Honda's driver, Jeanette Acevedo, 50, of Brentwood, and her passenger were treated there for non-life-threatening injuries.
Ferchland's Lincoln pickup truck was going west on Middle Country Road at about 7 p.m. when he struck the eastbound Honda Crosstour as it moved to make a left into the Lake Grove mall, police said.
The pickup then hit a utility pole, police said.
Detectives want the public's help in piecing together what happened in the high-impact crash because witnesses have provided different accounts on the vehicles' speed and other details, Fives said.
No charges are expected to be filed at this point, Fives said, and investigators are waiting for both vehicles to undergo safety checks.
Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash or the vehicles before the crash to call 631-854-8452.
