Saturday’s going-out-of business sale at the landmark Cyril’s Fish House in Montauk advertised that “Everything must go,” and one way or another, it all went, a former employee said Wednesday.
John Fairchild, who worked at the notorious bar and restaurant that stood out on Montauk Highway with its loud turquoise and lime green building and 12-foot-long marlin perched atop, said the premises were turned back over to the landlord on Tuesday.
Hundreds of people showed up for the all-day sale last week, and walked away with items that ranged from neon ceiling lights said to have been made by Katherine Hepburn’s uncle to photos that used to hang on the walls, tables and chairs. The 12-foot marlin sold for $1,500.
“Basically everything got sold — including the flagpole — but the [fake] golden nugget [that graced the front of Cyril’s], I’m going to hold on to that,” Fairchild said. He also kept the Cyril’s sign. “Some of the little stuff we gave away.”
Fairchild, a Springs resident who worked at Cyril’s for eight years and most recently handled administrative duties, wouldn’t disclose the sale proceeds but did say that the item that fetched the most was the famous Cyril’s surfboard that hung near the gold nugget. “That was over $2,000,” he said.
In between purchases, lots of stories about good times at Cyril’s were told. An attorney for Cyril’s, John Powers of Deer Park, said it opened in the 1980s.
Owner Cyril Fitzsimons did not attend the sale. Powers said Fitzsimons decided to close Cyril’s, which had been cited for various violations over the years, following a trial in East Hampton Town Justice Court last month that found the operators of the eatery, Clan-Fritz Inc., guilty of 47 misdemeanors relating to an illegal expansion.
