Setup man Jeurys Familia underwent surgery on Friday to repair bilateral sports hernias, the Mets announced Saturday.

It is unclear when Familia suffered the injury or whether he pitched through it during the season, though a source said Saturday that he did not report feeling any discomfort until last week.

Familia, 25, should be ready for spring training.

The righthander is coming off a breakout season, logging career bests in appearances (76), innings (77 1/3) and ERA (2.21).

He emerged as a dominant late-game presence and the primary bridge to closer Jenrry Mejia, who also underwent surgery to repair a hernia at season's end.

Familia is on his way back to his offseason home in the Dominican Republic after having the procedure performed by Dr. Bill Meyers in Philadelphia.
