Mets owner Steve Cohen has kind words for closer Edwin Diaz
After the Mets' season ended on Sunday night with a 6-0 loss to the Padres in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series at Citi ield, owner Steve Cohen made his way around the sullen clubhouse to console players.
Cohen’s second-to-last stop was with free-agent-to-be closer Edwin Diaz, whom Cohen chatted with and hugged. Cohen then spoke with Luis Guillorme before exiting the clubhouse without speaking to reporters.
When asked what Cohen’s message to him was, Diaz said: “He said, ‘Great season.’ He was really proud of us. I said, ‘We didn’t make our goal. Our goal was to win the World Series. But we’ve got to give the credit to the other team.’ He said, ‘Yes, pitched a great game, [Joe] Musgrove. We’re looking forward to seeing what’s coming up.’ “
Diaz was asked about his plans for free agency.
“I haven’t talked about that with my agent and my family because we were concentrating to play in the playoffs,” he said. “But now I’ve got the chance to think about that. We’ll sit with my family and we will make the best decision. I hope I can come back here. If not, I understand this is a business and we’ll go the best way with my family.”
