Quiogue estates for sale border Anderson Cooper house

Two properties in the secluded hamlet of Quiogue are on the market.

One is the waterfront home of the late Academy Award winner who wrote the screenplay for the 1954 film “On the Waterfront” – including Marlon Brando’s immortal line, “I coulda been a contender.” Writer and TV producer Budd Schulberg’s widow, Betsy Schulberg, has listed the 1946 wood-shingled home the couple shared for $3.5 million.

Schulberg, who died last summer at the age of 95, also gained notoriety for his involvement with, and subsequent testimony against, the Communist Party of the United States. He joined the party in the 1930s, but left six years later, when he become convinced the party posed a threat to the freedom of speech. He testified before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1951, publicly naming eight Hollywood figures as party members.

Schulberg’s 3,654-square-foot home, which has two fireplaces, sits on a wooded 2.4-acre lot overlooking Aspatuck Creek in Quiogue. The house has four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The property includes a garage with an office above it, a pool and a guest house. Paul Brennan of Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate, who is co-listing the property with Kent Rydberg, said, “It’s private, historic and a beautiful setting.” It also has a noteworthy neighbor – CNN’s Anderson Cooper owns an adjacent property, Brennan said

Before the properties were split, Cooper’s house was originally the hunting cabin on another Quogue estate that’s for sale, said Meredith Murray of The Corcoran Group. The historic Quantuck Bay property is listed for $10.8 million. The 17-room shingle-style house, which is estimated at 6,600 square feet, is on 9.3 acres, including 317 feet of bay frontage. The property includes a dock, a patio with a gas cookery and a grotto pool. “It’s a gunite pool, but lined with rocks so it looks as though it's part of a natural landscape,” Murray said. There’s a stable – which currently houses llamas that might be available to purchase with the property -- a corral and a barn-turned-garage with a 1,000-square-foot apartment upstairs.

“The house itself is in decorator showcase-condition. The owner renovates it every few years, it’s just stunning,” Murray said

The house itself has seven bedrooms, but could have 11, Murray said, adding that the owners have converted some bedrooms for other uses, such as a bar room and a morning room, she said. There are 5½ bathrooms. “It has a gorgeous dining room with a stencil-stained wood floor … And because the property is so old, there are spectacular old trees … that have been around for 100 years. And the waterfront side faces the sunset. It’s just heavenly,” said Murray, who is co-listing the property with Robert Murray.
