Michelle Obama makes cover of Better Homes and Gardens

Michelle Obama has a magazine cover career that would turn most models green with envy, and with her latest cover story, the first lady is also making history.

Obama is gracing the cover of the August issue of Better Homes and Gardens, making her the first public figure to do so since actor Cliff Robertson in 1963. She is also the first female public figure ever to gain the spot, according to this report.

In the mag, now on newsstands, Obama dishes on encouraging her family to eat right, but she admits it wasn't always easy to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“I had two little kids; I was busy … We had take-out at least three times a week. I didn’t realize that these habits were affecting my kids’ health. It was just what I felt I had to do to survive and keep the household going,” she says.

A visit to the pediatrician encouraged Obama to change her family's eating habits, but she didn't stop there.

Obama has been a leading advocate for preventing childhood obesity and most recently announced a partnership with Walmart and other food retailers to open more stores to give underprivileged communities easier access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

When she's not advocating for national change, Obama keeps it local, growing fresh veggies in the White House kitchen garden.

In the spring, Obama invited elementry school students to help plant the 1,100-square-foot garden. You can see pictures here.
