First bites: Akebono Fusion Sushi in Huntington
Akebono Fusion Sushi, situated in the former Huntington digs of Azuma, doesn’t look all that different from its predecessor: a few wooden booths, some tables and a sushi bar within an oddly shaped freestanding building on Broadway Greenlawn.
On a recent dinner visit, sushi proved a strong suit, with a “fantasy” roll ($14.95) — spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado and fresh jalapeño — working harmoniously. A sushi entree ($18), featuring eight pieces of assorted finfish plus a salmon roll, was fresh and simple — and plated without any flashing lights.

Less successful was an appetizer of BBQ squid, the rings and tentacles providing a real workout for the teeth. While a Thai red curry with chicken was over-sauced and not particularly Thai in flavor, shrimp teriyaki was nicely cooked.
