A 59-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition with a serious head injury after being struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon in Mineola, Nassau County police said.

Police said a 20-year-old man was driving his 2012 Toyota south on Nassau Boulevard and turned left on Jericho Turnpike when he struck the pedestrian, who was standing in the roadway, authorities said.

Police were called to the scene at 12:50 p.m. The man sustained severe head trauma.

Detectives said the crash didn't appear criminal and the vehicle passed all safety inspections.
