A school bus fire briefly closed Uniondale Avenue in Uniondale Friday, Nassau County police said.

Only the driver was on board when the fire began - and police said that driver was able to escape the burning bus.

A school bus fire briefly closed Uniondale Avenue in Uniondale Friday, Nassau County police said.

Only the driver was on board when the fire began - and police said that driver was able to escape the burning bus.

The incident occurred at 7 a.m. near Hampton Road. Volunteers from the Uniondale Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze.

Police said the fire began in the engine compartment. The cause was unclear.
