Feds indict No. 2 Senate GOP leader Libous and his son on tax charges

ALBANY -- The U.S. Attorney’s Office has indicted Sen. Thomas Libous (R-Binghamton) on charges that the Senate’s No. 2 Republican lied to FBI agents investigating his son.
The senator’s son, Matthew Libous, was indicted Tuesday on tax charges related to a job prosecutors say he obtained from an unnamed “state official” and which involved an Albany lobbying firm.

The senator’s son, Matthew Libous, was indicted Tuesday on tax charges related to a job prosecutors say he obtained from an unnamed “state official” and which involved an Albany lobbying firm.
The indictment by the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District accuses Matthew Libous of tax crimes including failure to report income.
The indictment of Matthew Libous states he obtained a job with a Westchester County law firm “pursuant to an arrangement negotiated on Libous’ behalf by a New York state elected official.”
The indictment says Matthew Libous’ salary was paid in part by an Albany lobbying firm.
There was no immediate comment from the senator.
The senator and son were scheduled for arraignment Tuesday.
"There was no quid pro quo arrangement with the law firm," the senator said in 2012. "I made no promises and nothing transpired between me or my office and the firm."
