Suffolk County police homicide detectives have identified a man who was discovered in the water at a Fire Island beach Sunday afternoon.

Michael Petruzzo, 64, who police said was homeless, was pulled from the water by beachgoers at the outer beach in Smith Point County Park in Shirley about 4 p.m., police said. He was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Petruzzo is believed to have drowned, police said.
