Suffolk homicide investigators Sunday were investigating the death of a man whose remains were found in a burned-out SUV behind Medford stores.

Suffolk police were called to the scene, a parking lot behind the stores at 2265 Route 112 after a 911 caller reported the vehicle on fire at 3:28 p.m.

"It is still an active investigation," a police spokeswoman said. The small blaze in the silver SUV was quickly put out by firefighters.

Ekram Demiroz, a pizza maker at nearby Tony's Pizza, was returning from a gas station when he spotted the fire.

"I saw the flame and smoke," he said. "A woman was standing in the parking lot, screaming."

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy.
