A car crash in West Babylon left two people dead and four others seriously injured early Saturday, Suffolk County police said.

The two-car crash took place at an intersection after 1 a.m.

One vehicle was traveling south on Great East Neck Road and the other car was heading east on Railroad Avenue when they collided, police said.

The driver and sole occupant of one vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A second person, who was inside a car carrying four other people, later died at a hospital.

Four people were taken to hospitals, all with serious injuries, police said.

Just after 9:30 a.m. Saturday, the road at Evergreen/Great East Neck just past Railroad Avenue remained closed.

And the first of two badly damaged vehicles was being towed.

Donna Roy, who has lived on Great East Neck Road for 40 years, said she noticed police lights flashing through her bedroom window on Saturday morning.

"It’s just terrible," she said.

She described the road in front of her home as a problematic area prone to crashes and speeding vehicles.

One person died in a single-car crash at the intersection in August, police said at the time. In July, three people were injured when a driver crashed into a house on Great East Neck Road.

Bill Elefterion, who has lived on the road for 50 years near where Saturday's crash occurred, said crashes there are common.

"I think it’s the overhead trestle, it blocks the light even though there's enough lights," he said. "I think people maybe are not paying attention."

Firefighters with the West Babylon Fire Department returned to the scene around 10:30 a.m. to help clear debris from the street.
