Man rescued from nursing center sewage pit
Firefighters from three departments rescue a man who fell down a sewage pit Friday at a nursing and rehabilitation center in Credit: Peter Walden Sr.Huntington Station, a Suffolk fire official said. The accident at the Apex Rehabilitation and Care Center happened about 3:40 p.m. and early reports indicate that the man was not seriously injured, according to the county's Fire Rescue Communications Section, which handles 911 fire and emergency calls. The man, 54, had been climbing a ladder out of a sewage hole that was 20 feet below ground at the treatment plant of the Apex Rehabilitation and Care Center on Birchwood Drive, police said.

He fainted about 3:40 p.m., and a pulley-and-stretcher system, rigged up by emergency services police and Huntington Manor firefighters, got him out about half an hour later.
He was taken to Huntington Hospital to be examined and did not appear to have serious injuries, police said.
Police declined to release his name but said he was from Miller Place.
The Apex center serves people who require long-term care and those who need physical rehabilitation before returning to their homes. Officials did not return a call seeking comment.
