A fire erupted in a vacant plane factory in East Farmingdale early Tuesday morning, shutting down a portion of a major street, Suffolk authorities said.

The fire was reported just after 12:20 a.m. at the old Fairchild Republic Company on Conklin Street, according to a Suffolk County fire official.

Conklin Street was closed in both directions between Route 110 and New Highway, Suffolk police said.

Firefighters from East Farmingdale and Republic Airport were battling the blaze and were expected to be there for hours, authorities said early Tuesday.

Work stopped at the plant in 1988. In 1992, the plant's owners signed a consent decree with state environmental officials to clean up contaminants at the site.
