A 13-year-old Brentwood boy was in critical condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center after being struck by a car while he was trying to cross Crooked Hill Road on a bicycle Sunday afternoon, Suffolk County detectives said.

The boy was heading east from St. Peters Drive across Crooked Hill Road when a car, heading southbound, struck him, said Det. Sgt. Tony Lavista. He suffered serious trauma to his head and other injuries.

He was airlifted to the hospital after pedestrians and motorists nearby called the police. Lavista said he did not believe the boy was wearing a helmet.

"It's a highly traveled road," Lavista said. "He tried to cross the road, he rode out in front of traffic and, unfortunately, he was struck."

Police said they believe the boy was on his way to a store on Crooked Hill Road, probably a deli, Lavista said. He was struck about 1:05 p.m., police said.

The car that hit the boy, whose name police have not yet released, was a Honda Accord, and was driven by Marlene Canales, 29, of Bay Shore.

Lavista said that while police are investigating the crash, "It doesn't look like there will be any charges."
