CSH's Schnier a LI Champ in two sports

Many high school athletes play multiple sports throughout the school year, and sometimes have the privilege of winning a championship in one, two or even three of them.

Not so many, however, win two Long Island Championships in two different sports, in a span of six days.

On Monday, Cold Spring Harbor’s Tim Schnier was part of a winning doubles pair in Cold Spring Harbor’s fifth consecutive Long Island Championship in Tennis, and on the Wednesday before helped the Seahawks clinch a Long Island Championship in Golf.

“It’s really cool to win two in one week,” Schnier said. “It’s a big accomplishment for me.”

Schnier, a senior, paired up with Sean Mullins, 8^th grade, at third doubles in tennis and earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over the Half Hollow Hills East pair of Eric Teplitz and Ross Reiffman. Cold Spring Harbor had led the match 3-2 at the time of Schnier and Mullins’ victory, making their win the championship-clinching match in a best-of-seven scoring format.

“It was really cool that we got the clinching match,” Schnier said. “We were pretty tight in the fist set, didn’t play well, weren’t hitting our shots, … but we came on strong.”

In golf, Schnier shot a 93 as Cold Spring Harbor edged Ward Melville 419-423 at Bethpage Black. He said since the tennis team has had so much success since he’s joined the team, winning a Long Island Championship each year, that the golf title this season was a bit more special special.

“With tennis we’ve won every year I’ve been on the team but golf was a big surprise,” Schnier said. “I thought we had no chance of winning so it was great.”
