A Mastic man is in stable condition after he was rescued from his burning home by firefighters and neighbors Saturday afternoon, Suffolk police said.

Seventh Precinct officers and firefighters from the Mastic Fire Department responded to a 911 call of a man trapped in a burning house at 9 Meadowmere Ave., Mastic, at 5:30 p.m.

Officers, firefighters and neighbors used ladders to rescue resident Christopher Murphy, 48, from the first floor.

The Mastic Fire Department extinguished the fire. Arson Squad detectives say the fire was caused by the failure of a box fan in a basement bedroom.

Murphy was transported by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition, police said.

Janet Murphy, 47, and Sean Murphy, 14, who also lived in the home, along with several firefighters, police officers and neighbors were treated for smoke inhalation.
