"It's a twisted love story about her and her husband, Chuck Traynor, set against sexual utopianism in the '70s. It's a harrowing film in a lot of ways, but it's not designed to titillate."

He added: "Unfortunately, the way Lindsay Lohan is perceived, there’s a skewed view of the movie,” which is set to begin shooting in September.

On Monday, Lohan was mandated to wear an alcohol-monitoring bracelet after she didn’t show up for a hearing May 20 in Los Angeles stemming from her 2007 DUI case.

Likening Lohan to Robert Downey Jr., a talented actor who has had his share of trouble with the law, Melamed said, “The public likes to redeem someone who has fallen. I hope that does this for her.”
