Freeport officials will hold a dedication of a new playground today at the Freeport Recreation Center.

The Halloween-themed ceremony at the playground will also commemorate the anniversary of superstorm Sandy, which hit Freeport hard, event organizers said.

Local volunteers and Allstate insurance company workers built the playground, organizers said. It was paid for by donations from the Allstate Foundation and the Manhattan-based Injury Free Coalition for Kids, village officials have said.

The event coincides with an annual Halloween parade, organizers said. The dedication is a chance to “celebrate the resilience of the Freeport community with a brand new playground,” an Allstate spokeswoman said in a statement.

The recreation center is at 130 E. Merrick Rd. in Freeport. The event begins at 4:30 p.m.
