Smithtown meeting on Main Street safety

Proposals to improve traffic and pedestrian safety on Smithtown’s Main Street will be discussed Friday during two community meetings hosted by the AARP.
Gatherings will be held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Smithtown Historical Society’s Brush Barn, 211 E. Main St.

Proposals to improve traffic and pedestrian safety on Smithtown’s Main Street will be discussed Friday during two community meetings hosted by the AARP.
Gatherings will be held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Smithtown Historical Society’s Brush Barn, 211 E. Main St.
Three pedestrians -- an 11-year-old Smithtown girl, a 33-year-old Afghanistan War veteran and a 65-year-old Queens man -- have been killed while crossing Main Street since November 2009.
The state next month is expected to begin reconfiguring the four-lane road to three. There will be one westbound lane and two eastbound lanes.
AARP and other organizations released a study this month saying Main Street should be made into two lanes, with one lane in each direction. The study, prepared by the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute, of Port Townsend, Wash., also recommended five roundabouts be built to replace traffic signals.
