Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer will join recently returned armed forces veterans and professional chefs at a Spam cook-off this afternoon at Tanger Outlets in Deer Park.
One hundred-million pounds of the canned meat were shipped abroad to feed Allied troops in World War II, when it was adored by some and choked down by others, and it is still a dependable staple of some military field rations.

Chefs from Garden City Hotel and Oheka Castle will attempt to dress it up using other ingredients of their choosing, and camping stoves.
The cook-off starts at 12:30 p.m., on the east side of the outlet center beside the Museum of American Armor Annex.
