Long Island weather: Warmer than normal with temps into 70s

Look for the chance of patchy fog Friday morning, the potential for showers later in the day — and partly sunny skies in between, forecasters say.

On another warmer-than-normal day, temperatures Friday are expected to head up to the low 70s, well above the average daily high, which is 57 degrees, according to the National Weather Service’s late Thursday afternoon forecast.

Then, back we go to the upper 50s for the warmest temperatures on Saturday, which is expected to be mostly sunny for much of the day.

For fall foliage fans, Saturday would be the better of the two weekend days for leaf peeping, as there’s a chance for showers overnight Saturday and through the day Sunday, the weather service said on Thursday afternoon.

Saturday can be expected “to be the driest and sunniest day of the weekend,” said Faye Morrone, weather service meteorologist in Upton. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-60s.

Leaf-color change on Long Island was expected to range mostly from midpoint to near peak, with a few spots seeing hues at full force, according to the weekly fall foliage report on Iloveny.com.

Spotters in Riverhead say leaf change this weekend for eastern areas of Long Island should be at midpoint, meaning around 50 percent.

Spotters in western Long Island say:

Foliage is just beginning to change at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on the North Shore.

Peak colors can be viewed at Belmont Lake State Park in North Babylon on the South Shore.

The Island’s parkways should offer good color, with a call out for a stretch of the Northern State Parkway in Nassau County between Exit 25 (Lakeville Road) and Exit 29 (Roslyn Road), expected to be near peak this weekend.
