Cody Eppley, claimed off waivers from theRangers April 5, lowered his ERA to 2.74 with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in Game 1.

"You talk about maybe one of the biggest surprises of the first half and it would have to be him,'' Joe Girardi said.

Has Eppley surprised himself? "Yes and no,'' he said. "I had confidence in my stuff and I knew I could pitch at this level. But for [Girardi] to have confidence and put me in some of those [late-inning] roles, that's been awesome. That's been a blessing in disguise.''
