The adult son of an elderly Roosevelt woman has been arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter in her death, and her daughter has been charged with abusing her, Nassau County police said Thursday.

Michael Rainford McDougall, 65, and Nichole McDougall Mullings, 55, both of Roosevelt, were arrested Wednesday after an investigation by homicide detectives into the death of Carmel McDougall, 85, according to a police release.

According to the release, police officers doing a wellness check Sept. 12 found the elder McDougall unresponsive and took her to a hospital, where she died almost a week later.

Detectives determined that Michael McDougall was responsible for the injuries that caused her death, according to the release. The detectives also found that Nichole McDougall Mullings had committed “abusive actions” against her mother on Aug. 30. She is charged with endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person in the first degree.

Both pleaded not guilty when they were arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead. Bail was set at $500,000 for Michael McDougall, according to court records. He is due back in court Oct. 10. Nichole McDougall Mullings was released with “non-monetary conditions,” according to records. She is due back in court Oct. 15. She could not be reached by phone Thursday.

David Wayne Haber, a Garden City lawyer representing Michael McDougall, declined to comment Thursday, saying he needed to investigate the allegations against his client. Nassau Legal Aid, representing Nichole McDougall Mullings, did not respond to a request for comment.

McDougall family members could not be reached by phone Thursday. An online obituary for a Carmel McDougall of Roosevelt that gave her age as 85 said she was born in Jamaica, worked as a dietitian at Caledonian Hospital in Brooklyn and was an active member of Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church in Roosevelt.
