THE SCOOP With tree-lined neighborhoods, exceptional recreational amenities and rich historic roots, Old Bethpage has a special charm.

"With historic facilities like the Old Bethpage Village Restoration and the Armor Museum, it's no surprise that this hamlet is often sought out by the film industry as a backdrop to projects like 'The Gilded Age,' " said Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto.

Many homebuyers interested in Old Bethpage like that it's set away from the highway but accessible enough if they need to commute, said Patricia Salegna, an agent with Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

"There's a lot of shopping nearby," said Salegna, adding that the properties tend to be a little big larger than in nearby communities.

Encompassing about half the hamlet, the 1,477-acre Bethpage State Park includes walking and cycling trails and the storied Bethpage Black golf course, home of the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open tournaments.

The hamlet boasts more than a dozen park facilities, many of which were recently upgraded with new playgrounds, basketball courts and more, Imbroto said.

Old Bethpage Village Restoration gives visitors a peek into 18th and 19th century life in the area through live demonstrations, historic buildings and reconstructions, as well as gardens, which, unlike the present day aesthetic flower gardens, were predominantly vegetable patches used to sustain Colonial families. Greens and peas were common crops, as were parsnips and beans, which were often dried or stored, and potatoes, carrots, apples, squash, and beets, which were kept in cellars during winter months. Flowers grown back then had medicinal purposes: hollyhocks were used to treat sore throats; irises for bruises; lily of the valley for weak hearts; and larkspur for lice.

Today's home seekers will find ranches, high ranches, split-levels and newer Colonials.
